The land was previously sold by former owner Mike Ashley to Helios Real Estate and Marrico for £9m four years ago and recently went to Reditum Capital. The stadium was last expanded in 2000, with a previous capacity of about 36,000 seats.

Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales said: “Given the demand for tickets, what we are doing is calculating the feasibility of the stadium and we are looking at what is possible.”

We started that recently, a formal process. I quickly learned that everyone has an opinion about what’s possible and everyone is an amateur architect.”

Eales revealed that there will be a survey for fans, to get feedback from those who love the team.

More consultation is needed but the first thing is to see what can be done,” Eales concluded.
